I got a chance to ask Mermaid Nova Sirene the Virginia Mermaid a few questions and this is what she had to say.
"My name is Hannah Burgess. I live in Virginia and I am a senior interactive design concentration in the School of Media Arts and Design and James Madison University but I’m sure you are all here to read about my life as a professional mermaid. I started my mermaid business four years ago as a freshman in 2013 and have worked for The real Mermaids Tank show, the Virginia Aquarium’s “Mermaid Monday’s”, and for the Kitty Hawk Kites Mermaid School as an instructor. I am a PADI open water certified SCUBA diver and an American Red Cross certified lifeguard. I have four tails, two from FinFun Mermaid and two silicone tails from The Mertailor and Mermaid Jessica. I love making mermaid videos and crafting accessories and tops to portray a variety of mermaid characters."

1. What did your first tail look like?
My first tail was an 18th birthday present in 2013. It was a light green spandex tail from Magictail, a German fabric tail maker. It had a digital scale and fluke print similar to FinFun tails. It was super see-through when it was wet but luckily it came with a matching scale bikini that I wore underneath so I didn’t show anyone my human “tail”.
2. What is the best part of being a mermaid?
For me the best thing about being a mermaid is being a symbol of “magic”. Although I don’t actually have magical powers that allow me to defy the laws of nature, I do have the magic to inspire artists to paint, poets to write, and for people of all ages to believe that they can be anything they want to be.
3. What are some of the challenges you face?
As a full time student I can’t always jump at an opportunity for mermaid gigs. I have to dedicate most of my time to my job as a student and so I only have the freedom to do mermaid things during school breaks. Even though I love what I study at any given time I would much rather be performing as a mermaid so balancing my priorities is certainly a challenge.
4. Did you plan on making a business when you when putting a tail on for the first time?
------If you don't have a business please answer, have you ever thought about turning your talent into a business? If not why?
When I got my first tail I was a freshman in college and expected to be a recreational mermaid until I finished school-- someone who swam in a tail for fun and didn’t intend to make a business out of it. It seemed like so much work to run a mermaid business and I didn’t think I could handle it and also be successful as a student but I’m glad to say I was wrong
5. What is your favorite thing to do with public groups, events or parties as a mermaid?
My favorite interactive thing to do at parties is to invite the kids to come and touch my scales. A lot of kids and adults are skeptical when they see me but when they feel how real my tail feels their faces light up and say “wow that’s legit!”
6. What is something you support as a mermaid to you have a cause or charity?
I’ve worked with the Virginia Aquarium’s “Mermaid Mondays” event for two years now. As a kid I would visit the aquarium and marvel at the animals but as I’ve gotten older I have realized how much they do for education, conservation, and rehabilitation of aquatic critters. I haven’t had the time or ability to work with them outside of their “Mermaid Mondays” event because of my primary job as a student across the state, but I hope to in the future.
7. If you were throwing a party what top 3 things does your perfect Mermaid Pool Party need?
My mermaid pool party would need plenty of pool toys for games, seaweed cupcakes with kelp frosting and sand sprinkles, and plenty of props for photos :)
8. Any tips for beginners looking at starting out as a mermaid?
Networking is huge for new mermaids! Find out if there are mermaids near you, contact pools in your area about offering mermaid parties and if you can afford it go to one of the annual mermaid conventions like NC Mermania held in Greensboro, NC! My mermaid career exploded after going to NC Merfest 2014 and meeting mermaids who helped me get started and have stayed close friends of mine since.
9. What is your favorite on land mer-accessory?
I absolutely love starfish jewelry and accessories! I used to have a pair of silicone starfish earrings that reminded me of the ones in aquamarine that would whisper compliments into your ear.
10. Other than a Fabulous tail what is one thing no mermaid can go without?
No mermaid look is complete without a fabulous top! Wearing something other than a bathing suit top can really help sell the mermaid look (although nothing beats the comfort of a bikini top). There are so many amazing tops on the market and you can also show your creativity by making your own. When I started as a mermaid I had two hand-me-down tops and now I have a whole drawer full, some that I have made myself and some from talented artists such as Mermaid Hyli and Mermaid Jessica. Just like with human clothes, different tops can help you experiment with different looks to cater to the theme of a certain event.
